SHOKEN: Becoming A Student

After practicing meditation for some time you may feel the desire for more spiritual direction or in choosing a path to deepen your practice. You can do this by formally asking to become a student of Ray Cicetti sensei, our resident teacher. If after speaking with him it is customary to write a short spiritual biography including:

  • What brought you to this practice in the first place?
  • How long have you been doing a regular meditation practice?
  • What other (if any) other teachers have you worked with in the past?
  • Are there any spiritual issues or dilemmas that you are dealing with currently?
  • When completed, bring it to sensei in daisan (private interview).

    If accepted it means:

  • Making a greater commitment to Zen practice (attending sesshin and zazenkai)
  • Choosing a body practice (eg: yoga, martial arts, dancing) or
  • Creative art practice (eg: painting, poetry, pottery)
  • Supporting the Sangha through service at the zendo, and
  • Working with Sensei Ray as your spiritual guide.
  • If you have questions about becoming a student, you can ask either the Practice Leader, Michele Daniels, or Sensei Ray.
