If you prefer to pay by check, make your check payable to Empty Bowl Zendo and mail to PO Box 640, Morristown, NJ 07963-0640. For further info including parking, link to the zazenkai tab. Registration will be accepted up to the Friday before, but please register in advance.
ART PRACTICE: CALLIGRAPHY
Add an art practice to your Zen program. EBZ offers a Japanese-type calligraphy class to anyone in the local Zen community that is interested. Classes are usually scheduled for the fourth Saturday of the month, church and zendo activities permitting, 8:00-9:30am, at EBZ. Contact Ron Manning email@example.com or (973) 997-0101 if you plant to attend. Supplies can be provided for first timer "curiosity seekers". We are in our third year now, and program veterans have made real progress. Suggested contribution is $10.
MONTHLY SET-UP VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP
The EBZ recruits volunteers for set-up on a monthly basis, without a long-term commitment, for Tuesdays as well as Thursdays. We need two volunteers for each day. You may volunteer for either day, or both, for the entire month. We use a Google Sheet for the sign-up, a different one from the zazenkai sign-up. Click HERE to access the sign-up Google Sheet link. The link is also on our EBZ’s announcement page. If you have questions or difficulties with the Sheet, email Ron firstname.lastname@example.org or call him (973) 997-0101.
SPRING 2017 ANGO - "Life is Practice, Practice is Life"
Ango, meaning "peaceful dwelling" dates back to the time of Shakyamuni Buddha when the sangha would gather before the monsoon (when travel was difficult) in order to focus and deepen practice. Following this tradition, EBZ will be holding a six-week Spring Ango, commencing at the end of the Garrison sesshin and concluding at the zazenkai on May 6.
Our theme for this Ango will be Dogen's essay "Gengokoan". LINK HERE to see a translation of the essay. If you're looking for commentary, we suggest the book "On Zen Practice: Body, Breath, and Mind" by Taizan Maezumi and Bernie Glassman. There is a copy in the zendo library. In addition to the reading, we are suggesting that participants commit to deepening their practice for the duration of the Ango, perhaps by vowing to increase time spent sitting zazen, vowing to work on generosity, or offering to take on a service role at the zendo, etc.
2017 PRECEPTS CLASS
The next class begins in April. Link to our Precepts tab for more information.
SEPTEMBER SESSHIN CHANGES
For those of you who like to plan ahead, please be aware we have changes in time and place for the September Sesshin. Instead of going to Garrison Institute in NY from September 21-24, we will be going to the Franciscan Spiritual Center in PA from Sept 28-Oct 1. Details will be announced in the spring.
